20W-50 engine oil is the heaviest multigrade in common use, valued for classic cars, older engines, and applications where a thicker oil film is exactly what the engine was designed around. At FIXRA, we stock 20W-50 oil in mineral and semi-synthetic formulations for cars, motorcycles, and machinery.

Modern engines have moved steadily towards thinner oils, but plenty of vehicles still call for a heavier grade. Older engines built with wider tolerances rely on that thicker film for oil pressure and sealing, and using a modern low-viscosity oil in them can do more harm than good.

20W-50 oil suits classic and vintage vehicles, older petrol engines, and high-mileage motors where oil consumption has become an issue. The heavier film helps maintain pressure and reduce burn-off in engines that a 5W-30 would simply pass straight through.

20W-50 is a common choice for air-cooled and classic motorcycles, particularly larger-capacity twins. As with any wet-clutch machine, use an oil rated to the JASO MA specification rather than a car oil, or you risk clutch slip. Our 10W-40 engine oil range covers the other grade most often used on bikes.

If you are restoring or maintaining an older vehicle, the handbook remains the best guide, and our registration lookup will confirm what fits where records are available.

Most 20W-50 sold today is mineral or semi-synthetic, which suits its typical applications well. Classic engines were designed around conventional oils, and many owners prefer to stay with them rather than switching to a synthetic.
